Screening: Bonzo the Dog cartoons

Wed 21 Nov 2012 @ 19:30 · Events

This evening’s event celebrates the 90th anniversary of the film career of Bonzo the Dog, a cartoon character created by George Studdy that made its first print appearances in The Sketch in the early 1920s.

Bonzo first appeared on screen in 1924 at the Marble Arch Pavilion, in the premiere of the first of 26 cartoons Sausage Snatching Sensation – which will be part of this evening’s programme of around 10 shorts, accompanied by Lilly Henley at the piano.

Cartoonist George Studdy posed at his drawing-boardDeveloped around the same time as similar cartoons like Felix the Cat, Bonzo quickly became a popular icon not just in the UK but around the globe. As star of one of the world’s first cartoons, he inspired mass-marketed merchandise, and became a favorite with both children and adults.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start, and the event is expected to end at 22.30.

Refreshments will be available – and there will be Bonzo merchandise for sale.
