Barbara Windsor is one of the most popular and best-loved actresses in the country – officially a National Treasure! From starring in a string of iconic films in the Carry On series, as well as The Boyfriend and Sparrows Can’t Sing, to finding a whole new audience as Peggy Mitchell in Eastenders, she has had a long and prolific career, and has won countless awards both for acting and lifetime achievement.

Windsor came to real prominence with her much-loved ‘good time girl’ character in nine Carry On films. The first was Carry On Spying in 1964 and her final one Carry On Dick in 1974.

Her theatre work has included starring on Broadway in Oh, What a Lovely War!, as part of Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop, when she received a 1965 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. In 1981 Barbara played sex-mad landlady Kath in Joe Orton’s black comedy Entertaining Mr Sloane at the Lyric Hammersmith, directed by her friend Kenneth Williams, later reprising the role for a national tour in 1993.

More recently, Barbara was advisor for and made a cameo appearance as herself in Terry Johnson’s TV film Cor Blimey (2000), the inside story of her relationship with Sid James. In 2011 she was the voice of the Dormouse in Tim Burton’s hugely successful film Alice in Wonderland. She has been awarded the freedom of the City of London, and received an MBE in the 2000 New Years’ Honours.

This is one of five Cine Sisters events being run in association with the Cinema & Television History (CATH) Research Centre at De Montfort University.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start, and the event is expected to end at 22.00. Refreshments will be available.
