The Gothique Film Society presents Bollywood Horror: Bees Saal Baad (1962)

Fri 6 Dec 2024 @ 19:00 · Events

Bees Saal BaadFounded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

Introduced by Kim Newman

We are delighted that acclaimed author, critic and broadcaster Kim Newman, who ‘cut his teeth’ at the Gothique Film Society, will be joining us to introduce a ‘first’ for the society: an evening of Bollywood Horror!

Bees Saal Baad is a particularly interesting choice as it is a version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s seminal, much-filmed novel ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, so it gives us a wonderful opportunity to see how Bollywood deals with a story we are so very familiar with. All the original ‘ingredients’ are there – the mysterious death on a fog-shrouded swamp, the next-in-line heir in peril, the investigating detective – but with a fascinating Bollywood ‘slant’.

The film was a ‘super hit’, and topped the box office charts in 1962. It was also one of the seminal movies that appeared towards the beginning of the Bollywood Horror genre. That had only fairly recently taken off with hits such as Mahal (“The Palace”) about an abandoned mansion with a hidden past. Like Bees Saal Baad, these early genre films drew inspiration from classic Gothic literature, and the horror was more eerie than terrifying.

But we hope you enjoy this glimpse into a very different genre culture and sensibility.

Doors open at 18.00 for a 19.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.
