The Kennington Bioscope is a regular cinema event featuring live accompaniment to silent films that takes place at the Cinema Museum.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (Germany 1929). Digital restoration. Directed by Richard Oswald. Starring Carlyle Blackwell, Alexander Murski, Livio Pavanelli, Betty Bird and Alma Taylor.

Richard Oswald’s seven-reel film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 novel The Hound of the Baskervilles, made in Germany (as Der Hund von Baskerville) with an international cast, was the last silent film featuring the character of Sherlock Holmes and was long considered lost apart from an abridged version on the 9.5mm home movie gauge. This edition provided some of the footage absent from the Czech-language 35mm print that was eventually recovered – minus one reel – in Poland during 2009. This is regarded as the most important screen version of the story made in Europe.

The first part of the programme will feature:

• A Canine Sherlock Holmes (1912). Directed by Stuart Kinder. A fun little short featuring lots of London bobbies and London locations, where the dog helps to catch the crooks.
• The Sleuth (1925). Directed by Joe Rock and Harry Sweet. Stan Laurel plays a detective who solves his cases by using various disguises – mainly drag!
• An extract from a Fox-Case Movietone from 1927, featuring Arthur Conan Doyle speaking about Sherlock Holmes and spiritualism.

Live piano accompaniment. Cyrus Gabrysch will be playing for The Hound of the Baskervilles and Colin Sell and John Sweeney will be accompanying the first half programme.

Silent film with intertitles which may be suitable for the deaf and hard of hearing.
