The BlackBoyJoyClub presents Queer Caribbean films made in Countries where being Queer is illegal and a radical status. Four shorts will be followed by a panel discussion.
Eating Papaw on the Seashore (2022)
This is a coming of age love story set in Guyana where Consensual same-sex intimacy is still illegal based upon British Colonial “buggery” laws.
Statement from the director, Rae Wiltshire: “I made this film to reflect black boys as human beings who can fall in love and that isn’t something to laugh at. In Guyana the idea of being Gay is treated like a joke. It was important to capture the humanity of a group of people who often do not feel accepted by society.”
After screening there will be a Q&A with the director (via zoom) in Guyana.
Gyal (2022)
This powerful film investigates the complex and multilayered history of hetero-patriarchal violence against Indo-Caribbean women.
Visually arresting and packed full of historical information on neo-colonial gendered violence, each frame will shock you and leave you with the impressions of these silenced voices.
Directed by Ryan Persadie who will be interviewed after the screening.
Sugar Free (2022)
Sugar Free is created entirely by a young Queer Caribbean diaspora team of talent. The film delves into the worlds of Brown Caribbean Queerness, neurodivergence and the search for community and belonging through a psychedelic and unserious lens.
Directed by Indo-Guyanese Brittany Misir, this film highlights the talents and topics of Queer Gen Z and Millennials of Caribbean heritage living in the diaspora.
The writer and producer Premika Leo will join us for a Q&A after the screening by zoom.
People VS Jones (2018)
This short documentary film follows Jason Jones as he heads to the High Court of Trinidad and Tobago to hear the verdict in his civil lawsuit against the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to challenge Section 13 and 16 of the Sexual Offences Act which criminalises ALL Adult Consensual Same-Sex intimacy with up to 25 years in jail.
Jason Jones will be here in person for a Q&A after the screening and will speak about the upcoming Appeal Court proceedings in Trinidad and Tobago challenging his victory.
Doors open at 18.00, for a 19.00 start.
