Government agent T. R. Devlin (Cary Grant) enlists Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman), the daughter of a convicted spy, to infiltrate a group of Nazis in Rio de Janeiro and seduce Alex Sebastian (Claude Rains). But things take a turn for the worse, as Devlin and Alicia fall in love. Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller was nominated for two Oscars, for Rains (Supporting Actor) and Ben Hecht (Original Screenplay). This was Hecht’s last nomination, and one of his many, many writing credits after a lustrous career in Hollywood going all the way back to the 1920s.
