Women & Cocaine are celebrating the month of Love with Cinema’s first ever sex symbol, the incomparable Jean Harlow.

We will be screening her sweaty and sizzling classic Red Dust (1932), from legendary director Victor Fleming, who brought you The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Gone with the Wind (1039).

Harlow stars opposite Clark Gable as Vantine, a prostitute vying for Gable’s affections on a plantation against the much more refined Barbara (Mary Astor). Come and see why it is Prince Charles’s favourite film.

By the time of her death at the age of 26, she had become one of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars. Harlow’s image has endured in fascinating modern audiences and tonight we will take a closer look at the short but sweet life of ‘Baby’ Jean.

From the period of 1930 to 1934, before the introduction of censorship (known as the Hays Code) Women were depicted in roles with a frankness and sex-positivity that remains rare even today. These newly independent women pushed gender boundaries as they pursued their own economic freedom and excitement, defying the previous Victorian ideals of domesticity, sexual purity and religion. Hollywood soon caught on and began to represent these women on screen, and each month we celebrate a different woman from that era.
