The 2017 Herne Hill Free Film Festival has released its programme – see it at www.freefilmfestivals.org/hernehill – and two of the highlights are silent film screenings.

Metropolis (1927), 29th April at 19.30: Taking place at one of the grandest churches in South London, All Saints Church in West Dulwich, we’re looking forward to this screening of Fritz Lang’s masterpiece. The setting is as dramatic as they come and has acoustics that we hope will bring the best out of Gottfried Huppertz’s original score (although unfortunately we don’t have budget for a live performance!)

Station Square Silent Showcase, 28th May at 21.00: Projected onto the front of Herne Hill Station and with piano accompaniment from local resident Neil Brand, the Silent Cinema Showcase has been a highlight of our festival since 2012 when we showed Buster Keaton’s The General (1926). This year’s films are The Rink (1916), directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, Limousine Love (1928), starring Charley Chase, and The Finishing Touch (1928), starring Laurel and Hardy. The area is pedestrianised for the night with local pubs and restaurants open, and this year it’s our closing event. Our fingers are crossed for a warm and dry evening!
