Catastrophe! Disaster Films Before and After CGI

Thu 16 May 2013 @ 19:30 · Events

Atlanta burning in Gone With the Wind Disaster movies have fascinated audiences since the very beginning of film-making and nowadays the conflagrations, crashes and calamity can be easily realised on a monster scale with the use of CGI. Want the end of the world in your sci-fi epic? No problem. It can all be produced in the office.

Samson and Delilah (1949)But before computers, disasters in the movies had to be staged using stuntmen, models, matte painting and real-time destruction. It’s amazing what was portrayed in these early examples of the genre. Atlanta and Chicago were burned down. San Francisco was reduced to rubble by an earthquake. A hurricane was simulated with aero engines. Gigantic fires engulfed real buildings. Dam bursts and tidal waves washed away a thousand screaming extras.

The Towering InfernoAir crashes, train smashes, liners sinking and animals running amok – they all thrilled audiences, who could experience these terrifying events from the safety of their cinema seats.

Sourcing some of the best action sequences ever put on to celluloid, Terry Sanderson has assembled a classic collection of cataclysms and their attendant heroics for your pleasure.

Hold on to your seats, it’s going to be a bumpy, wet, windy and thrill-packed ride.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licenced cafe/bar.
