The BAFTA award-winning film and TV director Jack Gold talks about his extensive career, with clips from his work, including news programme Tonight, The Naked Civil Servant, The Medusa Touch, Aces High and Inspector Morse.
We can look forward to a masterclass in film directing, as Jack discusses a body of work that has spanned news broadcasting, documentary, TV drama and feature films. His film-maker’s eye for an arresting image, a memorable moment, has been evident from the very start. Beginning with his first ever film, Happy As Can Be (a documentary film made whilst he was working at a sweet factory in Bermondsey in which he accompanied the workers on a coach trip to Dreamland in Margate) we will see how he told a story, using editing, sound, music and dialogue to drive the narrative.
In his feature films, Jack Gold has worked with some of the best actors in the country, including Nicol Williamson and Rachel Roberts (The Reckoning, 1969), Peter O’Toole (Man Friday, 1975), Malcolm McDowell and Christopher Plummer (Aces High, 1976), Richard Burton and Lee Remick (The Medusa Touch, 1978), Anthony Hopkins and Kristin Scott Thomas (The Tenth Man, 1988), Catherine Zeta-Jones and Clive Owen in The Return of the Native (1994), and many more.
Television work has included The Naked Civil Servant, starring John Hurt as Quentin Crisp, many Play for Today dramas, and Morse and the TV film Goodnight Mr Tom, both with the late John Thaw.
Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start. Cafe/bar.
