Kennington Noir presents Cry of the City (1948) on 16mm

Wed 12 Mar 2025 @ 19:30 · Events

Cry of the City Cry of the City (1948), directed by Robert Siodmak, starring Victor Mature, Richard Conte, Fred Clark and Shelley Winters.

Another noir from 20th Century Fox studios, this time from one of the masters of the genre, Robert Siodmak. Martin Rome (Conte) and Vittorio Candella (Mature) were childhood friends, but have drifted apart. Candella is now a detective lieutenant, whereas Rome has become a hardened criminal. They meet again when Candella and his colleague Collins (Clark), interview him in hospital, where he is recovering from bullet wound sustained in a police shootout, about a jewel robbery and murder.

Like many noirs of the time, part of the film was shot on location in New York City, and was well received critically, but Siodmak later commented: “I thought it was good but it’s not really my kind of film: I hate locations – there’s so much you can’t control”.

Presented from a 16mm print.

Doors open at 18.30, for a 19.30 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
