Tomorrow’s Freedom posterKennington Bethlehem Link benefit screening of feature documentary Tomorrow’s Freedom (2022) plus Q&A, to raise funds for Aida camp in Bethlehem, where around 60% of families in the camp have lost their main source of income, and around 100 men, women and boys are in custody without trial or charges.

Palestinian political leader Marwan Barghouti, is the subject of this documentary by filmmaking sisters Sophia and Georgia Scott. Barghouti is a figure whose potential to unify different factions has only grown during his 24 years in prison. Opinion polls show him to be the favourite presidential candidate for the Palestinian people, were they able to hold free elections, and he has been compared to Nelson Mandela, who supported the Palestinian cause.  Israeli courts convicted Barghouti of murder something he has always denied. The Guardian review of the film, which was an official selection at the Sheffield documentary film festival, said, “Here is a film that offers something not generally on offer in the media: an envisioning of the future.”

After the Hamas massacre of Israelis last October the Palestinian prison population has almost doubled following regular raids by the Israeli defence forces across the West Bank. Kennington Bethlehem Link project is raising funds to support the community of Aida camp which is suffering, like many communities, from the financial and emotional distress this large scale imprisonment has caused. Most are being held under administrative detention, meaning without charge, and there are allegations of abuse. In Barghouti’s case this has been substantiated by his lawyer who has documented physical abuse, denial of medical treatment and the impact of a starvation diet.

The Q&A with one of the producers of  the film Sawsan Asfari, and Chair of the KBL project, Pat Gaffney, will provide an opportunity to explore the issues.
