Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.
King of the Zombies, which shoehorns in zombies, Nazis, hypnotism, soul-transference of the switched-sex kind, adventure and extensive comic relief, was the first of several 40s horrors to mix monsters and the Third Reich.
A light aircraft crash-lands on a remote Caribbean island, and the survivors encounter a mad scientist of the kind most remote tropical islands seem to be occupied by. In this fabulously delirious film, it’s a bit unclear quite what he’s up to – the Rite of Transmigration is mentioned, and presumably this has something to do with all the zombies that are wandering around – but obviously it’s not for the betterment of the American way of life!
Celebrated black actor Mantan Moreland, taking an unusually prominent role, steals the show. He goes through his patented ‘scared’ shtick, but with great humour – and, even today, he is genuinely funny.
Queen of Outer Space, by complete contrast, is as camp as it sounds! American astronauts crash-land on Venus, only to find the planet ruled by women, who have subjugated the few men they have not killed. Evil queen Yllana rules with a rod of iron, but Talleah, a scientist, is waiting for her chance to challenge her.
Glamorous Zsa Zsa Gabor stars as Talleah in what has been described as a “merry spoof of science fiction”. Certainly, she is clearly thoroughly enjoying herself, flirting outrageously as she ‘floats’ around, demonstrating a wonderful knack for light, dotty comedy! Great fun!
Doors open at 18.00 for a 19.00 start.
Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.
