Cinema Museum 35mm Film Classics presents The Fly (1986)

Fri 29 Sep 2023 @ 19:30 · Events

The Fly (1986)The Fly (1986), directed by David Cronenberg, starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.

Scientist Seth Brundle meets science journalist Veronica “Ronnie” Quaife at an industry function and invites her back to his laboratory. He shows her the experiment he is working on, the transportation of objects over distance using “telepods”. Seth believes this will also work for living creatures, and asks Ronnie to document his work. The two start a romantic relationship, but one night they have a row, Seth gets drunk… and a disastrous accident happens.

The Fly is a radical reworking of the 1958 film starring Vincent Price, and is one of the best of Cronenberg’s body horror films. He was not the original choice of director, but when he joined the project he completely rewrote the script. Goldblum and Davis were in a relationship at the time they acted in the film. Make-up artists Chris Walas and Stephan Dupuis won an Oscar for their work transforming Goldblum, and indeed Walas went on to direct the inevitable sequel The Fly II in 1989. The film’s marketing people were the first to come up with the tagline “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

Plus a support programme, also screening from 35mm film.
