The Austrian Cultural Forum London presents a double bill of films by Paul Rotha: The Fourth Estate: A Film of a British Newspaper (1940) and World Of Plenty (1943) at The Cinema Museum.

austrian cultural forum logoThis screening is part of a mini season on the work of Carl Mayer, an unsung hero of film history who was born in 1894 in Graz/Austria and died 1944 in London. Exclusively a screenwriter, he never composed a single volume of prose or poetry. Mayer’s individual stamp on the films he worked on, is maybe as profound as the mark the directors left on them.
Mayer’s extensive body of work includes masterpieces such as:

  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) screened at the Ciné Lumière on Saturday 28th January 2023 at 18.30
  • Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) screened at the ACF on Tuesday 31st January 2023 at 19.00
  • The Last Laugh (1924) screened at the ACF on Wednesday 15th February 2023 at 19.00
  • Tartuffe (1925) screened at the ACF on Tuesday 28th February 2023 at 19.00

In exile in London, Carl Mayer mostly worked as a dramatic advisor and Paul Rotha was one of the first to recognise his genius and the two films The Fourth Estate (1940) and World Of Plenty (1943) illustrate this well.

Doors open at 18.00, for a 19.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
