Women and Cocaine Christmas Special presents Marie Dressler: Emma (1932)

Tue 20 Dec 2022 @ 19:30 · Events

“She makes you LAUGH, she makes you CRY, but always makes you HAPPY.” Marie Dressler shines in this pre code melodrama of the first order.

One of the highest grossing films of 1932 from the biggest box office star, Marie Dressler plays housekeeper, Emma, who helps lonely widower, Frederick Smith (Jean Hersholt) raise his spoiled and over-entitled children for 20 years. After vacationing together, Smith eventually reveals his feelings for Emma and the pair are married, but the path of true love never runs smoothly, and tragedy soon strikes in this daring melodrama.

Based on a story by Frances Marion and directed by Clarence Brown who also directed Garbo’s first talkie.

Come join us in this beautifully historic Grade II listed venue for an introduction, then screening of the film and exclusive raffle!

“My father warned me about men & booze, but he never mentioned a word about women & cocaine” – Tallulah Bankhead.
