Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.
We are delighted that acclaimed author, critic and broadcaster Kim Newman, who ‘cut his teeth’ at the Gothique Film Society, will be joining us to introduce two films based on the work of famed novelist Edgar Wallace.
The Flying Squad, based on Wallace’s 1928 novel, had already been filmed twice before: a silent version in 1929 and a ‘talkie’ in 1932. It follows Inspector Bradley of Scotland Yard who is on the trail of the murderous ringleader of a smuggling organisation. But matters become complicated when the criminal mastermind convinces pretty young Ann Perryman that the inspector is responsible for her brother’s death.
The Hound of Blackwood Castle is one of the best of the so-called Krimis, a series of Wallace adaptations that were made in Germany from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. Set in London, with a Scotland Yard inspector investigating, they were filmed in Germany – and often featured left-hand drive cars! In this film a giant hound appears to be behind a series of murders at Blackwood Castle, evoking Conan Doyle’s ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ as much as Wallace’s crime fiction!
Note: We are screening the much superior original German version – Der Hund von Blackwood Castle – with German language and English subtitles.
Doors open at 18.00 for a 19.00 start.
Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.
