The Gothique Film Society presents Go and Get It (1920) and The Monster and the Girl (1941)

Fri 27 Jan 2023 @ 19:00 · Events

Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

We are absolutely delighted to be presenting Go and Get It, as this silent horror was long thought to be a ‘lost’ film. Hearing that a 35mm print had turned up in the archives at Cineteca Milano, our intrepid member Barry Woolgar made contact – and not only did he obtain a digital copy, he also obtained their authorisation for one showing at the Gothique Film Society! The source turned out to be the original Italian 35mm nitrate release print. So not only does the film have an Italian title, the inter-titles are in Italian! Fortunately, Selene Marotta, one of the Cinema Museum volunteers, has very kindly stepped in and translated them. The film will also be accompanied by John Sweeney on the piano. So this will be a truly unique occasion.

The film itself is considered the fore-runner of the ‘killer gorilla’ horrors that would feature so heavily in the decades to come, with mad Dr. Ord putting a criminal’s brain into an ape. What could possibly go wrong?!

The Monster and the Girl is one of those later ‘killer gorilla’ films, but this one was Paramount’s sound-era re-boot of Go and Get It. So it will be fascinating to see these two back-to-back.

Doors open at 18.00 for a 19.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.
