Kennington Noir presents Flamingo Road (1949) on 16mm film

Wed 19 Oct 2022 @ 19:30 · Events

Flamingo Road Carnival dancer Lane Bellamy (Joan Crawford) finds herself stranded in a southern town ruled by corrupt political boss Titus Semple (Sydney Greenstreet). Lane becomes romantically involved with sheriff Fielding Carlisle (Zachary Scott), a weakling under the control of Semple. Seeing Lane as a liability to his own political ambitions, Semple mounts a campaign to smear her and get her driven out of town, and Lane finds she can’t get a job. She even gets arrested on a trumped-up morals charge, but when released from jail she finds work as a “hostess” at a road house where she meets Dan Reynolds, another local politico. They marry and move to a home on prestigious Flamingo Road. Their marriage is soon marked by scandal (of course) when a drunken Carlisle visits Lane at home one evening and ….

Joan requested that this picture be directed by Michael Curtiz, with whom she had found success with Mildred Pierce (1946). She is typically great in this somewhat OTT noir melodrama, and Sydney Greenstreet is wonderfully grotesque as the corrupt sheriff.
