Adolfo Aristarain is one of Argentina’s greatest living film directors. He is best-known for Tiempo de revancha (1981), Un lugar en el mundo (1992) and Lugares comunes (2002). But Martín (Hache) (1997) combines the finest qualities of all these movies in a single magnificent film: tenderness, humour and acute social and political comment.

Set in Argentina, Madrid and the south of Spain and co-written with Aristarain’s wife, Martín (Hache) is a beautifully acted dissection of ambivalence and, especially, of alienation in its multifarious forms: alienation from one’s country, from one’s son, from one’s lover and from one’s friend. Federico Luppi is superb as Martín, a divorced filmmaker who is also cut-off from his emotions. His 19-year-old estranged son is poignantly interpreted by Juan Diego Botto and yet another of Argentina’s extraordinary array of brilliant actresses, Cecilia Roth, plays Martín’s long-suffering mistress, Alicia. But perhaps the most memorable performance belongs to Eusebio Poncela as Dante, an actor who becomes a confidant valued by everyone. As always, Aristarain resolutely resists the temptation to moralise. Martín (Hache) is, ultimately, a profoundly moving and witty observation of human complexities and frailties.
