Kansas City Confidential (1952), directed by Phil Karlson.
Elements of Kansas City Confidential have appeared in countless movies – The Thomas Crown Affair (1968, 1999) and The Usual Suspects (1995) to name but two – and it is said to be one of the inspirations behind Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992).
John Payne plays Joe, an ex-con who now drives a florist’s delivery truck. One of his regular delivery stops is right next door to a bank. His daily delivery routine is copied by three masked robbers who pull off an armored car heist. The three robbers are the excellently cast Neville Brand, Jack Elam, and Lee Van Cleef. Joe is suspected of complicity and his criminal record doesn’t help matters. However, he gets a lead on a possible participant in the heist and tracks him down to Mexico. And that’s where the suspense really starts.
With a supporting programme and a short intro from Kulraj Phullar, who has recently completed a PhD on “good girls” in classic Hollywood film noir at King’s College London.
