Syd ChaplinAs an actor, Sydney John “Syd” Chaplin’s appearances included the “Gussle” comedies and the feature-length A Submarine Pirate (1915). He also served as business manager for his younger half-brother, Charlie Chaplin, negotiating his first million dollar contract in 1917.

Biographer Lisa Stein Haven will present the highlights of Syd’s raucous life and career, including some new post-publication information, just uncovered last year, that sheds new light on the atmosphere surrounding the filming of Charlie’s The Great Dictator (1940).

Lisa Stein Haven, an English professor from Ohio University, is the author of Syd Chaplin: A Biography and editor of Charlie Chaplin’s 1933-4 travelogue A Comedian Sees the World.

Doors open at 14.00, for a 14.30 start.
