The fifth Kennington Talkies event is a screening of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935).
Director: Frank Lloyd
Screenplay: Talbot Jennings, Jules Furthman and Carey Wilson, from the novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall
Cast: Charles Laughton, Clark Gable, Franchot Tone
Lt. Fletcher Christian (Clark Gable): “But the prisoner is dead, sir!”
Captain William Bligh (Charles Laughton): “Never mind, continue with the punishment!”
Mutiny on the Bounty was one of the biggest hits of its time. Although its historical accuracy has been questioned (inevitably, as it is based on a novel inspired by the facts, rather than on the facts themselves), film critics consider this adaptation to be the best cinematic work inspired by the famous – or notorious – 18th century Royal Naval mutiny.
Interestingly, Captain Bligh was a local resident, living in a house in Kennington facing the Imperial War Museum, in the row of houses along from the Three Stags). He was buried in the family plot at St. Mary’s, Lambeth, which is now the Garden Museum.
