An Evening with Roy Hudd

Sat 7 Jun 2014 @ 19:30 · Events

Croydon-born comedian, actor and writer Roy Hudd recalls his eventful life in conversation with former News Huddlines writer Glenn Mitchell.

Roy Hudd began his career in the 1950s, first as a Butlin’s redcoat then in the last days of Variety. In the 1960s Roy became a fixture of TV satire in Not So Much A Programme, More A Way Of Life and in his own series The Illustrated Weekly Hudd.

He later did the same on radio for over a quarter of a century in The News Huddlines.

Among Britain’s most versatile talents, Roy has appeared in everything from the Dennis Potter plays Lipstick On Your Collar and Karaoke, to Coronation Street, via Hammer Horror with Peter Cushing (1968’s Blood Beast Terror), the comedy-drama series Common As Muck and much else along the way. He has also continued to work in theatre, notably in pantomime (often also as scriptwriter) as well as plays such as A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum, The Solid Gold Cadillac, When We Are Married and projects connected with his lifelong interest in music-hall, which began when Roy’s grandmother took him to see the greats of Variety in the 1940s.

Roy is a longtime member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, serving as King Rat in 1989 and 2000. He was appointed OBE in 2004 and in 2010 received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Westminster.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start. Refreshments will be available in our licensed café/bar.
