Odeon Leicester Square organist Donald MacKenzie presents and accompanies a classic from Cecil B. DeMille… plus Chaplin’s comic interpretation!
DeMille’s version follows the story of Prosper Mérimée’s novella, which became the basis of Bizet’s popular opera. Don Jose (Wallace Reid), an officer of the law, is seduced by the gypsy girl Carmen (Geraldine Farrar), in order to facilitate her clan’s smuggling endeavors. Don Jose becomes obsessed, turning to violent crime himself in order to keep the attentions of Carmen. Originally made in 1915, the existing versions of this film appear to be from the 1918, re-edited release.
Chaplin’s comedy version, Burlesque on Carmen, was his thirteenth film for Essanay, released in 1915 and then later recut into a different version in 1916.. Charlie Chaplin played Darn Hosiery and Edna Purviance played Carmen.
