BAFTA-winning film editor, filmmaker and teacher Don Fairservice sheds light on the development of the editing process, from the beginning of cinema to the present day.

Early film editor examining length of filmWith lots of clips from classic films, he demonstrates how the editing process maximises the effectiveness of the filmed material. He traces the development of editing from the primitive forms of early cinema through the upheavals caused by the advent of sound, and explores the challenges to convention that began in the 1960s and which continue today.

This evening will be invaluable to students of film – and fascinating for any film lover!

A Very British Coup

Don Fairservice’s film and television work includes Channel 4’s A Very British Coup (1988) and Beautiful Thing (1996), and numerous acclaimed adaptations, including Emma (1996) and The Railway Children (2000). His book Film Editing: History, Theory and Practice is the definitive guide to his pivotal craft.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start.
