We are delighted to welcome Michael Barratt as he looks back on a career that has spanned seven decades. The evening will include extracts from programmes he has worked on, plus films made about the BBC’s Lime Grove Studios. Expect famous names and colourful anecdotes!
Early on a reporter for the BBC current affairs programme Panorama, and then 24 Hours, Michael became the lynchpin presenter on Nationwide from 1969 to 1977, chairman of BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time from 1973 to 1979 and presenter of Thames TV’s Reporting London in the 1980s.
A national teatime fixture, Nationwide attracted 11 million viewers each night. Its beauty, Michael believes, was its ability to switch in a seamless blend from short pieces on skateboarding ducks and talking rhubarb to an interview with the prime minister, with every region of the country given due weight.
Michael has appeared, as himself, in both films and television, including The Goodies and the film The Magic Christian (1969), with Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. He is the author of several books, his latest being Mr Nationwide published last year.
Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start. Cafe/bar.
