In association with the Shaw Society, the Cinema Museum is delighted to present a screening of two major films, to celebrate not only Christmas but also the Society’s 71st birthday, with a special introduction from the Society’s Chairman Alan Knight.
Caesar and Cleopatra (1945) is a lavish, expensive production with a dream cast including Vivien Leigh, Stewart Granger, Claude Rains, Flora Robson and Stanley Holloway, while Major Barbara (1941), edited by David Lean, stars Wendy Hiller, Rex Harrison, Robert Morley, Robert Newton, Sybil Thorndyke and Deborah Kerr.
Bernard Shaw, arguably the most important playwright of the 20th century and a seminal intellectual figure of his age, famously rebuffed offer after offer from Hollywood. Finally he teamed up with producer/director Gabriel Pascal (see top left) and they made Pygmalion (1938), starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller, and later the two films being screened today. Shaw, the only person to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature and an Oscar, adapted his plays for film.
For those unfamiliar with Shaw, his combination of wit with insight and paradox was potent enough to create a new word in the English language. We therefore offer a Shavian afternoon of fun and thought, laughter and emotion from the wonderful creative world of George Bernard Shaw.
Doors open at 13.00 for a 14.00 start. Refreshments will be available.
