Sadly we have had to cancel this event, as Michael Winner is unfortunately not well enough to undertake his one-man show. His assistant has contacted us: “This is a great disappointment to him as I’m sure it is to you but we have no alternative but to withdraw. Please accept our sincere apologies.” We would like to extend our thanks to Michael for his continuing support for the Museum and our very best wishes for his recovery.
Michael Winner – director, producer, and latterly food critic for the Sunday Times – began his screen career as an assistant director of BBC television programmes, cinema shorts, and full-length “B” films. Making a name for himself as a fully fledged director in the early 1960s, in 1964 he began a partnership with actor Oliver Reed that would last for six films over a 25-year period, including The Jokers (1967) (also starring Michael Crawford), and the Second World War satire Hannibal Brooks (1969).
Hannibal Brooks drew the attention of Hollywood and Winner was soon asked to direct for American markets. Winner’s first American film was Lawman (1971) starring Burt Lancaster and Robert Duvall, and then in 1972 he directed Marlon Brando in The Nightcomers and for the first time worked with Charles Bronson in both Chato’s Land and The Mechanic.
Winner and Bronson went on to collaborate on Death Wish (1974), a film that defined the subsequent careers of both men. Death Wish tracks Paul Kersey, a liberal New York architect who becomes a gun-wielding vigilante after his wife is murdered and daughter is raped. The film generated major controversy during its screenings but was a huge box office hit, spawning two sequels. Death Wish 3 made in 1985, was set in New York City but filmed mostly in London for budgetary reasons – including scenes filmed around what is now our very own Cinema Museum in Kennington!
Winner remains prominent in British, with regular appearances on television, including in a well-known series of comedy advertisements that he directed for an insurance firm.
Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start, and the event is expected to end at 22.30. Refreshments will be available.
